Glidevale successfully exhibit at NHBC External Walls Seminars
The NHBC External Walls Seminars were a complete success. The event was very well attended, with delegates attending from a wide range of functions within the housebuilding industry.
The introductory presentation made by the NHBC contained some thought provoking statistics, highlighting the serious issue of the problems encountered with external walls. In 2014 alone, £81m was paid out by the NHBC in claims to repair homes of less than 10 years old. This equates to 42,000 homes and unfortunately, 42,000 dissatisfied customers. Out of this, external walls claims in 2014 totalled £16.5m, with one in four claims relating to external walls. As a result, the NHBC has identified the issues around external walls to be a key risk area and considers it a priority for the construction industry to rectify.
While render, insulation and structural issues are topics covered during the event, the bulk of the NHBC’s presentation relates to use (and in many cases, incorrect use) of cavity trays and dpcs. With a focus on how to avoid future claims by being aware of the common defects when using cavity trays and dpcs, the presentation explains in detail how to design out such pitfalls at the outset.
In between the seminar sessions, delegates were able to take the opportunity to talk to Glidevale representatives at the exhibition and to see for themselves the range of Z-led cavity trays and associated benefits offered by the business.
“Many of the external wall problems faced by the housebuilding industry stem from a lack of understanding by the trades concerned and also poor workmanship, both of which can result in water getting into a property and causing damage,” explains Kelly Phipps, Glidevale’s Commercial Manager.
“Through our extensive range of Z-led cavity trays and preformed dpcs, Glidevale has the means to address all of the issues raised by the NHBC External Walls Seminars. We are already in discussion with a number of companies who visited the events about how we can best support them with their cavity tray needs,” he continued.
Key feature/benefits of Z-led range of cavity trays from Glidevale:
Glidevale offers a large range of tray options to suit different installations. This includes stepped abutment trays, apex / starter trays and the unique corner catchment set. Integral pitch marks are located on the back of each AT tray, resulting in easy and quick installation and preventing incorrect positioning on site.
Intraweep AT trays include a pull out tab which overcome the need to rake out joints below. This prevents later damage to the trays.
Bed weeps are integral in AT trays, ensuring the removal of water from the cavity at the earliest opportunity. This avoids the need to rely on one single weep hole. Bed weeps can also be supplied separately for stand-alone installation.
The HT range includes preformed corners, removing the need to fold and seal, unlike conventional dpc where external corners can be very difficult to seal.
Z-led cavity trays are available with optional factory-fitted lead flashing or lightweight Aluflash flashing, avoiding the need to cut and dress flashing on site.
Z-led continuous MCR trays are manufactured from heavy duty, precreased roll material, making them much more robust than conventional dpc and far less likely to be damaged accidentally on site.
Z-led cavity trays are self-supporting and do not need to be tied to the inner leaf of the wall, allowing inner and outer leaves to be built independently. Due to the positioning of Z-led cavity trays, the cold bridging element is removed, thereby optimising the thermal efficiency of the building.
Glidevale offers comprehensive technical support to help customers to specify the correct cavity trays for their installation. Post-sale, the Glidevale service continues with scheduled call offs, delivery of products by site when required and a support pack for site and business managers containing all information needed to ensure correct installation of the trays on site. Detailed product/installation instructions are also contained in each box.
