APRIL 08 - PROTECTING PARADISE

Paradise Project

Part of the largest retail development in Europe- Liverpool One, a major regeneration of 42 acres in the heart of Liverpool, will be protected-literally- from the outset through its construction techniques.

Liverpool One, being delivered by the Paradise Project, in the heart of the city will provide 154000m2 retail and 21,500m2 leisure facilities, including site 13b- three storeys of retail with a cinema above also on three levels. The largest block of the development, it features Glidevale’s Protect TF200 vapour permeable membrane as a key element of its construction.

Specialist sub contractor Longworth Metal Roofing, part of the Longworth Building Services Group, is undertaking the envelope construction of the stair, lift and service cores including secondary steelwork, timber substrate, zinc wall cladding and composite insulated panel with stainless steel to the roof coverings for main contractor Laing O’Rourke Northern Ltd, chose the TF200- supplied by SIG and branded with Longworths’ logo- to help form the vertical facades. The membrane is laid over plywood before the zinc cladding is fitted, initially to provide weather protection to the timber before zinc cladding. It further prevents any underside corrosion to the zincwork, and ensures the completed building remains dry and damp-free.

Protect TF200, which is certified by BBA allows water vapour to escape from the structure whilst providing an additional line of protection by resisting rain, snow and dust from penetrating into the building. It offers more than four times the vapour permeability recommended by both the BRE and TRADA in timber frame construction.

Stephen Barnett of Longworth comments, “We decided to use Protect TF200 as it provides weather protection during the construction process and superb performance once the building is complete. It’s a good quality product. It was logical to have it branded as the Paradise Project- as many of our works- are very visual.”

The principal elements of Liverpool One will be open in 2008- the year Liverpool becomes European Capital of Culture. Once complete, with construction costs budgeted at £500m, the development will incorporate 40 individually designed buildings in six districts, providing over 1.5m sq ft of shopping and over 3000 jobs.

Protect TF200 is one element of the comprehensive range of vapour permeable and impermeable membranes from Glidevale including the innovative Protect TF200 Thermo, BRE certified reflective breather membrane for timber frame construction. The company- part of the Building Product Design Group- additionally supplies roofing and roof ventilation products aimed at providing innovative yet practical solutions to changing market requirements.
