OCTOBER 07 - BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO NORTH LANARKSHIRE HOUSING

Timber Frame Engineering

New life is being breathed into what is claimed to become one of the most desirable residential areas of Motherwll using state-of-art technology.

An integral element of the design of the 72 homes at Wood Grove, Motherwell by Miller Homes with Oregon Timber Frame Engineering, has been the incorporation of materials to help achieve Miller’s policy to develop a carbon reduction strategy, including Glidevale’s new TF200 Thermo insulating membrane. Within the development of three- four- and five-bedroom homes released to date, all plots have been sold before completion of construction.

Glidevale Protect TF200 Thermo provides better vapour resistance than that required by TRADA and NHBC, and simultaneously improves thermal performance by at least 100%+ in timber frame wall construction. Tom Cahill of Miller Homes- the UK’s largest privately owned housebuilding, property development and construction business- observes, “Oregon Timber proposed TF200 Thermo against our usual breather membrane, as it meets, indeed exceeds, our specification and is price competitive. It is helping ensure we meet the required U-values and SAP ratings demanded by current Building Regulations.”

Protect TF200 Thermo combines the benefits of Glidevale’s established TF200 timber frame vapour permeable membrane with enhanced thermal performance achieved by a vapour permeable integral highly reflective aluminium layer, helping achieve the requirements of Section 6 (Energy) of the Scottish Technical Standards and also Approved Document L in England. Used conventionally with traditional mineral wool insulation, Protect TF200 Thermo can improve the U value of a typical wall from 0.28W/m2K to 0.25 W/m2K. As well as complementing the wall’s thermal performance, TF200 Thermo provides a water vapour resistance of 0.5MNs/g, achieving the requirements recommended by TRADA and the NHBC. It also gives a second line of defence against the weather during the construction of the external cladding/ brickwork.

Protect TF200 Thermo is the latest addition to the Glidevale range of Protect membranes, including Protect A1 and Wunderlay impermeable underlays, VP400 vapour permeable underlay, Protect TF200 vapour permeable membrane for timber frame buildings and Protect VC Foil insulating vapour control layer. Glidevale is part of the Building Product Design group, which specialises in developing innovative yet practical roofing and ventilation products in line with changing market requirements.
