DECEMBER 06 - HISTORY MEETS STATE-OF-ART BUILDING IN NORWICH
A stylish development in Norwich is combining the
history of its setting with modern living through the
use of innovative building materials.
St James Meadow, a development of 14 houses, six apartments
and two penthouses selling for between £185,000
and £400,000, within minutes of the city centre,
has been built by John Youngs for Alcor Developments,
to designs by CMC Architects. Local planners required
that the development reflected its historic setting
opposite the city’s oldest surviving brick building,
the 14th Century Cow Tower, but met current Building
Regulations. Part of the solution to achieve that demand
was the use of Glidevale’s new Fulmetal Rediroll
dry fixed ventilated ridge and hip system.
Developer Charles Dowding of Alcor Developments observed, “The
planners required the development to clearly mark the
end of the commercial area and the transition to residential.
We added our own requirements that the homes were high
quality in all detail and reflected the historic setting:
we chose Roman profiled tiles for the roof, for example.
Glidevale’s Rediroll gave us the assurance that
the roofspace was properly ventilated, but maintaining
as clean a line as possible to the roof. Most of the
homes are already sold as a result of their quality
of finish and fixings.”
Claimed to be truly universal, Glidevale Fulmetal
Rediroll is a continuous aluminium roll with integrated
fixing that is simply laid across the ridge to provide
integral ventilation and resistance to rain penetration,
providing a constant, gentle throughflow of air into
the roofspace, avoiding potential damp and condensation
issues in the roof void.
Properly installed with ridge tiles fitted over, the
Fulmetal Rediroll system is virtually invisible, enhancing
the roofline architecture and aesthetics.
Its metal construction means it is rot proof and corrosion
resistant, ensuring a longer lifespan against conventional
fabric-based systems. It eliminates the need for ridge
fillers and unions, and fits all tile profiles, and
requires no special tools, meaning one product can
be used for all appropriate jobs, and regardless of
weather, increasing the roofers’ productivity
and profitability.
Glidevale is part of Building Product Design Group, which
specialises in supplying ventilation and building products
to the industry. Registered to BSEN ISO 9901, Glidevale

in line with changing requirements.
