NOVEMBER 06 - SIMPLIFYING COMPLIANT TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTION

Improved thermal performance of up to 170%+ can be achieved in timber frame wall construction simply by using a new, insulating vapour permeable wall membrane.
Glidevale’s Protect TF200 Thermo combines the benefits of the company’s established TF200 timber frame vapour permeable membrane with enhanced thermal performance achieved by a thermally bonded integral highly reflective aluminium layer, helping achieve the requirements of Approved Document L.

Bruce Newman, Glidevale Senior Product Manager, observes, “Building Regulations increasingly demand for us to construct airtight, thermally efficient buildings. The key is keeping the warm inside and the moisture out. Protect TF200 Thermo achieves both in one easy to use membrane.”

Used conventionally with traditional mineral wool insulation, Protect TF200 Thermo improves the U value from 0.28W/m2K to 0.25 W/m2K. When used in conjunction with Glidevale’s Protect VC Foil reflective vapour control layer, performance is further enhanced to 0.22W/m2K* and has the added benefit of incorporating a service cavity on the warm side of the insulation. In an unventilated airspace larger than 20mm with Protect TF200 Thermo facing into the airspace, an R value of 0.49W/m2K is achieved, giving a 170+% improvement on thermal performance over a conventional airspace.

As well as complementing the wall’s thermal performance, TF200 Thermo provides a water vapour resistance of 0.5MNs/g, achieving the requirements recommended by TRADA and the NHBC. It also gives a second line of defence against condensation build-up for the life of the building.

UV and heat stabilised, the membrane’s reflective surface is corrosion and damage resistant. Protect TF200 Thermo has high burst, tensile and nail tear strengths, minimising damage in transport and during installation and on-site. It is available in 2.7 x 100m and 3.0 x 100m rolls.

Protect TF200 Thermo is the latest addition to the Glidevale range of Protect membranes, including Protect A1 and Wunderlay impermeable underlays, VP400 vapour permeable underlay, Protect TF200 vapour permeable membrane for timber frame buildings and Protect VC Foil insulating vapour control layer.
