JULY 06 - CALA THROWS LIGHT INTO NEW HOMES
CALA
Homes is throwing new light into a former hospital development
whilst maintaining the historic ambience of the project
through innovative use of modern building materials and
technology.
Greenbank Village will provide over 400 homes from apartments
to detached five-bedroomed family homes, ranging in price
from £210,000 to over £1 million. The development-
due for completion in 2006- includes refurbishment of
the original Victorian buildings, designed by Robert
Mottram and opened by Edward VII in addition to an extensive
range of new build homes. A number of the new apartments
and the adjacent mews will feature Glidevale Sunscoop
tubular rooflights as a sustainable solution to optimising
natural daylight within the properties. Some 35 Sunscoops
are being used, “catching” natural daylight
through a discreet glazed dome on the roof and reflecting
it down a mirrored tube through the roofspace into the
accommodation below.
Explains CALA Homes’ architectural manager Malcolm
Ferguson, “The development has a very high specification,
and we wanted to use energy-efficient solutions where
possible to create a bright atmosphere within the homes.
Sunscoops will enable us to flood the core elements of
the top floor apartments with light and bring the ambience
we want to the top floor.”
Research undertaken by SRI (Silsoe Research Institute)
shows a single 250mm diameter Sunscoop that is 2.5m long
gives more than four times the amount of light of a single
60W bulb on a bright day with direct sunlight, without
any of the energy consumption or heat generation, and
effectively creating a light source in a room without
any requirement for electrical wiring and connections.
Glidevale’s Sunscoop roof flashing and polycarbonate
dome is AA fire rated, enabling use without restriction
on number and proximity of adjacent property.
