JUNE 06 - PRESTOPLAN FOR MMC

The drive to utilise and comply with Modern Methods of Construction and provide affordable housing is being met in one step by Lovell, with help from Prestoplan and Glidevale.

Lovell is achieving the feat through its partnership with Prestoplan, one of the UK's leading designers and manufacturers of timber frame housing, and the use of timber frame technology against traditional brick and block methods of construction. Lovell is so convinced by the benefits of Modern Methods of Construction that on some joint development sites, it will build all the homes- both those for its social housing provider client and its own- from Prestoplan units. Timber frame currently accounts for a sizeable proportion of Lovell's housing, from bungalows through four-bedroom detached houses to apartment blocks.

Prestoplan itself has taken steps to provide units that comply with all appropriate regulations- to the detail of the vapour permeable membrane, choosing Glidevale's Protect TF200. The high performance membrane has been specifically developed to provide a second line of protection against rainwater penetration during the life of the building, but allows the home to "breathe", letting water vapour escape. Protect TF200 has a vapour permeability of more than four times that recommended by BRE and TRADA, and resists the passage of water, wind blown snow and dust into the interior of the building.

Explains Mike Callow, Lovell Technical Manager, "Using Prestoplan timber frame helps us build to Modern Methods of Construction, cost effectively, and achieve the high eco- ratings required by many social housing providers. It also gives us the flexibility to easily adapt approved designs to accommodate specific requirements for each site. We find Prestoplan units give us better performance, superb speed of build and are completely watertight."

Prestoplan's Martin Dunn adds, "We produce quality timber frame units, using quality materials. Protect TF200 gives us value for money, and the performance levels we require."

Protect TF200 is part of the extensive range of Protect branded membranes from Glidevale Ltd, all of which are BRE/BBA certified. It is available in a range of roll sizes and widths.
