FEBRUARY 05 - HELPING PROTECT TIMBER FRAME
One
of the UK's largest timber frame kit manufacturers
is protecting its homes from risk of condensation- and
therefore the potential for rot- in the roofs, with a
move to the first “third generation” roofing
underlay to be launched in the UK.
Scotframe Timber Engineering, which manufactures precision
engineered timber frame kits for three to six bedroomed
homes up to 420m2 , has switched all its undertile membrane
requirements at both of its Scottish manufacturing facilities
to Glidevale's Protect A1, supplied by Index Timber
& Building Supplies.
Protect A1 was the first “third generation”
roofing underlay to be developed, and was recommended
by Index because of its universal application and its
inherent strength and durability. Additionally, reliability
of supply could be assured.
Explains Index managing director Gary Fowlie, “We
had been supplying an imported product but were becoming
increasingly concerned over reliability of supply, which
prompted us to review the membrane as part of our supply
partnership with Scotframe, to ensure they continue to
receive the best package possible from a single source.
Protect A1 gives both ourselves and our customers something
better in terms of product performance, and it is readily
and reliably available!”
Glidevale's Protect A1 was claimed to be the first
real alternative to Type 1F roofing felt. Completely waterproof,
it helps ensure the roofspace remains dry, absorbing any
condensation not removed by roof ventilation and releasing
it to be expelled by the ventilation when conditions improve.
It also has independent certification allowing unrestricted
use with regard to wind uplift, meeting the 2.5kPa performance
criteria at 343mm batten spacings to allow unrestricted
use in all exposure conditions in the UK and Ireland.
Clean to handle, Protect A1 is also easy to handle, being
a third of the weight of traditional bitumen based underlays,
and unaffected by temperature changes. UV resistant, and
with a nail tear strength of 140 (tested to MOAT27:5.4.1)
and tensile strength of 102N/25mm, Protect A1 can effectively
be used as a temporary roof covering for up to three months
if required.
